There are two approaches to rhinoplasty, the “open” approach and the “closed” or “endonasal” approach.
The “open” approach involves a small incision at the base of the nose called the columella. Dr Leo prefers the “open” approach for the more complex as it allows the surgeon direct visualisation of the nasal anatomy and hence a very accurate reconstruction of the nose in terms of nasal height and tip projection.
The “closed” method is used for a simple nasal augmentation cases as well as septoplasty cases where the septum or cartilage in between the nostrils is deviated. This is a “scarless” technique.
Dr Leo Kah Woon is an experienced plastic surgeon who is experienced in rhinoplasty. Accredited by the Ministry of Health of Singapore, Dr Leo was awarded his Membership from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh as well as Master of Medicine in Surgery in 2004. He was awarded the Gold Medal in Plastic Surgery for being the top candidate in completing Advanced Surgical Training at the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery.
Dr. Leo is also actively involved in the academic training and development of budding young surgeons. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. In addition, he is also an Examiner for the Plastic Surgery Exit Examination for qualifying plastic surgeons in Singapore. He was an Examiner for the Final M.B.B.S Surgical Examination for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 2014.
Your initial consultation is very important as it will give you the opportunity to share your expectation on rhinoplasty with your plastic surgeon. You can make the most of your consultation if you come in prepared with a list of questions to ask. Don’t hesitate to point out the issues you wanted to address for assessment. These include: nasal hump, asymmetries, tip turned up or down, wide nasal tip and more!
Communication is the key to an honest evaluation. It will leave you feeling confident that the procedure will be successful and safe. Your visit with the plastic surgeon should be a pleasant one. You will be asked of your medical history, your goals and desires for the rhinoplasty procedure and your reasons why you need one. It would also be important to assess if you are experiencing breathing problems to undergo nasal examination.
Rhinoplasty is surgery performed to improve the functional as well as aesthetic outcomes of the nose. Rhinoplasty is probably one of the most complex and fascinating aspects of plastic surgery. It requires an intimate knowledge of the nasal anatomy as well as an aesthetic eye to create a nose that is harmonious and in balance with the rest of the facial features.
Overall, there are definitely more females than males seeking rhinoplasty surgeries. However, the percentage of male rhinoplasty patients is definitely increasing. Patients are typically in their twenties to forties. They usually have been disturbed by the appearance of their noses for some time before mustering the courage to go for surgery. A lot of my patients are in sales or customer oriented jobs and they realise the importance of looking good and feeling good.
